Material selection should not be based only on the term “ESD” or on the appearance and color of the material.

Sensitive glass substrates and panels must move between different process sections while maintaining controlled contact and stable motion.

Why Roller Profile Matters

Material is only one part of roller performance.

The geometry of the outer running surface determines how the roller contacts its mating surface and how it guides the moving component.

ESD UHMWPE vs ESD PEEK: Which Material Is Better for Rollers?

Both ESD UHMWPE and ESD PEEK can be used to manufacture precision rollers for semiconductor, LCD/FPD and cleanroom automation equipment.

However, choosing the material with the highest theoretical performance does not always provide the best engineering value.

One of the most important considerations is cost versus actual application requirements.

ESD PEEK is a high-performance engineering plastic, but its material cost is significantly higher than ESD UHMWPE.

In practical roller applications, we have found that ESD UHMWPE can cover the requirements of the majority of operating scenarios while providing a much more practical cost-to-performance balance.

For this reason, ESD UHMWPE is often our preferred material to evaluate first for guide rollers, transfer rollers and panel handling components.


Why ESD UHMWPE Is Often the Preferred Choice

For many roller applications, ESD UHMWPE already provides the combination of properties required by the equipment:

  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Low friction
  • Electrostatic control
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Lightweight construction
  • Low-noise operation
  • Practical machining possibilities
  • Significantly lower material cost compared with ESD PEEK

For many LCD/FPD panel transfer, glass handling, wet-process and cleanroom automation applications, these characteristics are already sufficient for reliable operation.

Using ESD PEEK in an application where ESD UHMWPE already meets the operating requirements may significantly increase component cost without providing a meaningful practical advantage.

Therefore, the more expensive material is not automatically the better engineering choice.


When Should ESD PEEK Be Considered?

ESD PEEK becomes more valuable when the application places demands beyond the practical performance range of ESD UHMWPE.

Typical considerations may include:

  • Higher operating temperatures
  • Higher mechanical loads
  • Greater dimensional stability requirements
  • Higher structural strength requirements
  • More demanding chemical environments
  • Specialized semiconductor process conditions
  • Other demanding operating requirements

In these situations, the additional performance of ESD PEEK may justify its significantly higher material cost.

If the application has particularly demanding technical requirements and the project budget allows for a premium material solution, ESD PEEK can therefore be considered as a higher-performance option.


ESD UHMWPE or ESD PEEK: Choose According to the Application

The goal of engineering material selection should not be to choose the most expensive material available.

It should be to select a material that provides the required performance, reliability and service life at a practical cost.

For most ESD guide roller and transfer roller applications, we recommend evaluating ESD UHMWPE first.

If ESD UHMWPE already satisfies the mechanical, electrical, chemical and environmental requirements of the equipment, moving to ESD PEEK may not be necessary.

When operating conditions exceed what ESD UHMWPE can reliably provide — and the project budget supports the higher material cost — ESD PEEK becomes an appropriate higher-performance option.

The most expensive material is not always the best engineering choice. The right material is the one that meets the actual application requirements at a practical cost.


Why Precision Machining Matters for Plastic Rollers

Many industrial plastic rollers are manufactured by molding.

Molding is suitable for high-volume standardized components, but specialized equipment frequently requires dimensions, profiles or material combinations that are not available as standard molded products.
